BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM

Turn-over of renovated BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM to the National Museum

On January 31, 2010 (Sunday) at 8:00 o'clock in the morning, the newly-renovated BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM will be officially turned over by BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC. to the National Museum in very simple ceremonies at the site museum's grounds in Ambangan, Libertad, Butuan City. This is the culmination of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) executed by the National Museum in Manila and the METRO MANILA CHAPTER of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC. in May, 2009.

The repair and improvement of the display building at the BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM was funded by the METRO MANILA CHAPTER of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC. and managed by the BUTUAN HISTORICAL & CULTURAL FOUNDATION in the implementation of the MOA between the National Museum and METRO MANILA CHAPTER of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC.

At 9:30 a.m. of the same day (January 31, 2010 - Sunday), Butuan's BALANGAY Boat will be launched unto the Agusan River from the boat-building site at the Luna Compound in Bading, Butuan City.

Butuan's BALANGAY Boat will then undergo final checks on the water and perform sailing tests around Butuan Bay in preparation for the VOYAGE OF THE BALANGAY. It will  join the newly-repaired "Balangay DIWATA NG LAHI" in sailing to southern parts of Mindanao, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Southeast Asian countries and eventually, China.

The two-boat flotilla will sail off from Butuan's PPA Port on February 4, 2010. The next leg will be Butuan-Ozamiz whose first stop will be at Punta Diwata in Carmen to honor the first balangay's namesake place in Butuan/Agusan.

The building of Butuan's BALANGAY Boat is a joint project of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC., BUTUAN HISTORICAL & CULTURAL FOUNDATION, and KAYA NG PINOY FOUNDATION. This history-making project  was supported by Butuanon communities all over the world who donated cash, goods and services.

The initial budget for the boat-building project was funded by BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM INC. with a Php1 million start-up. BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM also provided Php250,000 worth of project materials and support activities like the kick-off symposium, souvenir T-Shirts, streamers, flaglets, fencing of site, PR coordination, information and communication, etc.

BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM

Five kilometers east of Butuan City proper lays the graveyard of the Balangay One dated 320 A.D. or 1,688 years old. This wooden plank-built and edge-pegged boats measured an average of 15 meters in length and 3 meters wide across the beam. To date, 9 Balangays have already been discovered in Ambangan, Libertad sites. Three have been excavated and others are still in their original buried sites.

"Balangay DIWATA NG LAHI" built in Manila last June, 2009 is a replica in size of Butuan Boat One whose dug-up remnants are displayed in the Balangay Site Museum in Ambangan, Libertad, Butuan City.

Butuan's BALANGAY Boat currently being prepared for launching on January 31 was based on the longer and wider measurements of Butuan Boat Two whose pieced remains are displayed at the Maritime Hall of the Philippine National Museum.

The exhibits display building of the Balangay Site Museum was repaired and renovated under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the National Museum and the Metro Manila Chapter of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC. The chapter provided the funds for the improvement project which was managed by the Butuan Historical & Cultural Foundation.

The National Museum is looking for government units and non-government organizations which can undertake the rehabilitation of the Balangay Museum's comfort rooms, storage areas, perimeter fence and museum grounds.
