Upon launching unto the Agusan River from the boat-building site at the Luna Compound in Bading, Butuan City, Butuan's BALANGAY Boat will undergo sailing tests and final checks before joining the newly-repaired "Balangay DIWATA NG LAHI" in its voyage to China. The two-boat flotilla will sail off from Butuan's PPA Port on February 4, 2010. The next leg will be Butuan-Ozamiz whose first stop will be at Punta Diwata in Carmen to honor the first balangay's namesake place in Butuan/Agusan.

As President of BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC., it is with pride and pleasure that I announce the name of the Butuan-built boat as "Balangay MASAWA HONG BUTUAN".

In addition to supporting the objectives of the Voyage of the Balangay, the purpose for BUTUAN GLOBAL FORUM, INC.'s involvement in the boat-building project is to advance its advocacy for the world-wide recognition of Butuan's historic role in the encounter of cultures here in our part of the globe. The name of "Balangay MASAWA HONG BUTUAN" is in line with the pursuit of this mission.

Thank you all for your kind support. Congratulations to the boat-building committee for a job well done. Good luck to Team Balangay on its voyage to China.

"People of Butuan, YOU should be proud because in your veins run the proud blood of an Ancient Kingdom which you can tell to everybody 'WE have a civilization long long long before', 5 times earlier before the coming of Magellan and the Europeans. I'm asking the people of Butuan, you should realize that sense of pride, that you have such great inheritance as a people. I hope with the Balangay project you will be together as a people to show to the whole country, that KAYA ng BUTUAN, KAYA ng PINOY  ---Arturo Valdez, Voyage of the Balangay Team Leader

(herein is the lyrics of the original composition made by Dr. RTED ESGUERRA, dedicated to the Balangay Expedition Team, the Butuan Global Forum, and the historical people of Butuan, sang on January 31, 2010 at Luna Compound, Bading Butuan City during the launching of MASAWA HONG BUTUAN into the waters of Agusan River)

BUTWAN BALANGAY

May isang minsan sa ikot nitong mundo
Na pinagalaw n gating ninuno
Mga mandirigma at matatalino
Mandaragat at Butwanong katutubo

Sila nuo’y maunlad na kabihasnan
Kuyaw ilang kusog sa kadagatan
Sinasamba at kinakatakutan
Sumpay sila sa tubig kalibutan---

Naglalayag ang Balangay sila duon sabay-sabay
Lapat kamay, sagwan, bugsay, bayanihan sa Balangay

Sa Balangay kami ay nagkakaisa
Ang manggagawa, guro at magsasaka
Artisano, kababayhan, kabataan
Naay pari, ulama ug babaylan

Ang Balangay sa gamhanan na Butwan
Naging uri ng isang katatagan
Bundok, ilog, dagat at kagubatan
Bahandi ning inahang kalikasan---

Naglalayag ang Balangay sila duon sabay-sabay
Dungan dayong isang hanay bayanihan sa Balangay

Magsama-sama, mag-uban-uban
Tulad nuon sa kaharian ng Butwan
Tanyag na yaman sa timog silangan
Lahing magigiting at may karangalan

Kung sundon lang sa tibuok na katawhan
Ang dakilang aral ng kabayanihan
Makab-utan nato ang kauswagan
At babangon uli an gating BAYAN.---

The 'Masawa Hong Butuan' (background) on her maiden voyage on February 4, 2010 sailing together with 'Diwata ng Lahi' (foreground) along Butuan Bay enroute to Gingoog City. For easy identification, notice the blue stripes layag (sail) of Masawa Hong Butuan.

The two Balangay's Diwata ng Lahi and Masawa Hong Butuan left Gingoog City Saturday morning (February 6, 2010), arrived safely at the port of Balingoan, Misamis Oriental.

The Voyage of the Balangay continue sailing in the morning of February 7 enroute to the island province of Camiguin where they will spearhead a two-day activity before heading towards Cagayan de Oro City. (photos by Balangay Voyage)

Butuan’s Balangay

It’s a little past 11AM as I waited impatiently in the cargo office of Cebu Pacific Air for my bag of photo equipment to be handed over while the new balangay is about to be launched any moment into the waters of Agusan River, a good 15 minutes away from the Bancaxi Airport. The anxiousness was building up within as the thought of traveling hundreds of kilometers for this one event and to miss it by a hairline will indeed be appalling!

The predicament begun as I set foot again in Butuan the day earlier; having arrived, minus my check-in baggage which they were only able to trace that afternoon, was sent to Tuguegarao instead! What’s more, it can only be shipped by the first flight the next day, ETA 1145.

So there I was, halfway through the launch program, ran to the airport and finally got my equipment at 1130; from thereon, we practically drove like crazy back to the launch site with barely 30 minutes to spare as the newly built 2nd balangay hit water at around 12 noon.

Butuan’s Balangay

Christened “Masawa hong Butuan” with “hong”, a Butuanon word meaning “of”; the chosen name is in attribution to Ferdinand Magellan’s suppose 1st Easter Mass in March 31, 1521 at the Masawa delta near the entrance to the Agusan River, and not in Limasawa, an island in Southern Leyte.

The new balangay is about 25 meters long, 6.5 meters wide, and 2 meters tall measured at the center. It weights 7 tons and was constructed in about 60 days by the same Badjaos who built the first balangay, Diwata ng Lahi.

The hard woods used were mainly from apitong trees, traditionally preferred boat building lumber. Sourced in the mountains of Butuan and donated by the Monobo tribe from their ancestral domains, the selection and cutting of trees was also marked with an ancient ceremony.

Launch of Masawa hong Butuan

People from all walks of life started arriving at the Luna Compound in Brgy. Bading as early as 8AM. The program started around 10 with the usual fanfare, dedications, and heartfelt appreciations for all those who make this project a reality, particularly the Butuan Global Forum.

The documentalists among Team Balangay's crew members used "Tiririt" as their staging area in taking pictures of the launch. Actually, they were also serving as support teams together with their teammates on board the tugboat lent by a kind Butuanon supporter of the project.

Voyage of the Balangays

From Butuan, the Mindanao leg will past through the cities of Gingoog in Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamis and Oroquieta, Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte where our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was exiled, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, up to the city of Davao then head straight to Sibutu in Tawi-tawi.

After the Mindanao voyage, the expedition will go around Southeast Asia; Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, and all the way to Shanghai, China; reenacting the ancient tribute of the Butuanon ancestors about 1,000 years ago to the Sung Dynasty and in time for the 2010 Shanghai World Exposition.
